Connecticut School Counselor Association

Promoting Excellence in School Counseling since 1963

CSCA Chairman’s Message

I am very excited to be serving as your Chairman for the 2019 - 2020 school year. I hope to follow in the path of my predecessor, Virginia DeLong, as she successfully championed the CSCA's major goals and objectives of advocacy, professional learning and the growth of a professional school counseling identity and community in Connecticut.

This past year Virginia and other Board of Directors advocated before legislators for all Connecticut students to have access to a comprehensive school counseling program.  As a result, Senate Bill 956 was signed into legislation ensuring that guidelines for a comprehensive school counseling program will be created and adopted in collaboration with the CSCA. The guidelines will include access for all students to a comprehensive school counseling program that provides academic, social-emotional, post-secondary and career readiness programming provided by a certified school counselor with adequate training.

Our legislative efforts will continue this year as the CSCA Board Members have been appointed to serve on Legislative Committees and Collaboratives to provide their expert testimony which will protect Connecticut students and their opportunities to learn in equitable and supportive schools.

The CSCA's regional vice-presidents and level liaisons have also worked diligently to provide our members with quality professional learning experiences.  Last year we hosted several events including mental health awareness and best practices conferences, social hours, walks for causes, the Annual Awards Gala, mindfulness workshops and many more in which many of you participated.

As I and the other members of the Governing Board and Board of Directors look to the upcoming year, we commit to continuing advocacy for Connecticut's school counselors and Connecticut's students and for providing outstanding professional learning.

We proudly announce to you that the CSCA 2020 Annual Conference will be better than ever!  We are planning a day and a half conference which will be held at the Mohegan Sun, Uncasville, Connecticut, May 28-29, 2020.  Our theme is Inspire, Empower, Embrace.  This Annual Conference will be amazing in that we will be able to attend workshops enlightening us with the most up-to-date practices, trends and information; we will connect with colleagues from around the state and neighboring states; and, we will hear from top-notch nationally acclaimed speakers while enjoying ourselves at a fun and festive venue.  We hope you and your colleagues will join us for this outstanding event. Save these dates!

I am honored to serve as the Chairman of the CSCA.  I am inspired and empowered by the impactful work you do for Connecticut's students.

As the school year winds down, report cards go out, promotion/graduation ceremonies occur and you finally get to start weeding through that giant pile on your desk, it is also a great time to reflect. Part of what makes a great educator is reflecting on your school year in order to determine what changes you might like to make in the future. I often look forward to this part of my year. It gives me a new outlook on the year ahead, gives me a chance to decide what professional development or reading I'd like to accomplish over the summer and ultimately gives me insight into the planning of my next year as a school counselor. Of course, taking some time for me by relaxing, reading, traveling or gardening are also high on my to-do list once the school year is over! If you haven't gotten into the mindfulness craze, this summer might be the perfect opportunity for you. In our busy lives, navigating through the day-to-day, we often forget to just "live in the moment". Take time to really enjoy the summer breezes and the sunshine. Refresh, renew and rejuvenate your soul!

This year has been a very successful year for CSCA. Some of the highlights include several professional development days held throughout the state where school counselors from across Connecticut were networking and engaging in new learning. Our overall membership has increased in our organization. We held a very successful annual conference at the University of New Haven in March and are currently looking forward to next year's conference. Our government relations committee started making some headway with our state legislators and the education committee and are looking to the future, hoping to hire a lobbyist that can help with our legislative efforts. This year has been amazing and I have been so honored to serve as your Chairman of the Board of Directors. I look forward to chairing again next year and having an even more successful year. I hope that you will consider joining us on the board and/or sharing your ideas. Please feel free to email me at any time - You can find a copy of the end of the year report for CSCA by following this link.

Enjoy, relax and savor your summer!
